Harry Miller

The Book of Mirrors

Harry Miller is a resourceful contact in John Keller’s investigation, helping him locate people connected to the Joseph Wieder case. Appearing through phone calls rather than a sustained on-page presence, he provides practical leads that move Keller beyond the manuscript and toward witnesses from the past.

Role in Keller’s Investigation

A couple of hours after Keller met a retired homicide detective, Harry called with news about Sarah Harper. He had traced her history and learned that she graduated in 1989, worked for about ten years at a school for children with special needs in Queens, and later married Gerry Lowndes, a jazz singer. Harry reported that the marriage made her life miserable, that she became involved with drugs and served a year in prison, and that she divorced in 2008. Now living in Castle Hill in the Bronx, she seemed willing to discuss the old events.

Harry’s research also reached Derek Simmons. He had spoken with Leonora Phillis, who said Simmons was not home, and explained that Keller wanted to talk with him about the Wieder case. She did not know what the inquiry concerned but was expecting Keller’s call. Harry added that she was looking after Simmons and that they lived mostly on benefits, giving Keller both a point of contact and a warning to bring cash when visiting.

Sources and Further Leads

Harry presents himself as having contacts across a wide area, joking that he did not find Sarah by calling 911. Keller takes him at his word and asks him to identify people from the 1980s who worked in the Department of Psychology and knew Joseph Wieder well—not only academic colleagues, but also members of Wieder’s group. Harry agrees to look. His usefulness lies in this willingness to pursue informal leads and locate people whose names are not yet prominent in Keller’s investigation.

Narrative Function

Harry’s calls turn scattered background into actionable routes: Sarah may be willing to talk, Leonora can help Keller reach Simmons, and former members of Wieder’s circle may offer another perspective on the professor. The leads do not settle the competing accounts of the case; instead, they extend the inquiry and bring Keller closer to people who can complicate or clarify what happened. Harry’s role is that of a behind-the-scenes information broker whose research helps the investigation keep moving.
